New Toys Earn Places In Toy Hall Of Fame

It's a hall of fame class that's expected to be played with as paper airplanes, the board game ‘Clue’ and Wiffle Ball have become the newest inductees into theNational Toy Hall of Fameat the Strong museum in Rochester, New York.

These items will take up permanent residence next to Crayola Crayons, Checkers, Radio Flyer wagon, the jump rope and dollhouse. To be eligible, the toys must have inspired creative play over several generations. So far, there are 65 toys in the National Toy Hall of Fame.

As for why something like the paper airplane got in, it’s easy. "Where some toys require financial investment, paper airplanes start with a simple sheet of paper, coupled with creativity and dexterity, to produce a toy with infinite aeronautical possibilities," saidChristopher Bensch, The Strong's vice president for collections. "They allow the imagination to take off and soar."

  • What didn’t make it?This year's other finalists were sand, the card game Uno, play food, the game Risk, Matchbox cars, My Little Pony, Magic 8 Ball, PEZ candy dispenser and Transformers.
