Why Volunteering To Help Others Makes You Happier

Looking for something to replace all that time you were spending watching Netflix now that things are opening up? How about doing something that will make you feel incredible and won’t cost you anything more than time? Besides the fact that volunteering does wonders for other people, it also does wonders for you as well.

The fact is we’re wired to want to help others. According to Yale psychology professorLaurie Santos, research shows we’re actually happiest when we’re doing things for other people and that those “who do more volunteer work tend to be happier than those that don’t.”And that’s true for people all over the world.

So go ahead and volunteer for selfish reasons. Help others so you can get a nice dose of that fuzzy feeling again. According to social psychologistNaomi Eisenbergerthat “warm glow” you feel after volunteering is your brain activating the same rewards centers you do when you eat something tasty or win money.Which we’d all agree are amazing feelings. Now, add in the fact that volunteering helps us feel less lonely and gives us the sense of purpose our jobs don’t, and you’ve got the reasonswe all should have started lending a hand years ago.
