While Apple is holding their big iPhone event today, introducing yet another new phone, it seems most people aren’t necessarily interested in running to get the latest model, especially considering it could cost them as much as $1,000.
A new “USA Today” poll finds that only 13% of consumers have plans to upgrade their phones within the next three months, while only 22% want to do so in the next year. What’s more, 39% of those who don’t plan to upgrade say the biggest reason is lack of interest in new models.
It turns out, more and more people are simply holding on to their old iPhones. The survey finds that 27% of folks kept their phones for one or two years, while 21% held on to them for two years or longer. And it seems more people these days own older phones, with 14.8% having the iPhone 6S or 6S Plus, which was released in 2015, and another 12.5% owning the iPhone 7, which came out in 2016. As for the newest models, only 11.7% of people had the iPhone 8, and 6% had the iPhone X, which came out last year.
As for what would get folks to upgrade their phones, 27% would only do it if their current phone broke, while 23% are looking to upgrade in the next one to two years, and only 6.3% want the new phone as soon as possible.
