According to a new study, having coffee before bedtime will not keep you up. Having alcohol before bed, on the other hand, will mess with your sleep. Yep, seems counter-intuitive, since coffee is a stimulant and booze is a depressant, but researchers at Florida Atlantic University found that drinking a cup of coffee four hours before bedtime was not found to affect sleep quality. The study found, however, that having alcohol within four hours of going to sleep did lead to worse sleep quality. And if you’re a smoker, listen up. The research found that nicotine was especially bad for sleep length and quality, and its effects are worse if you have insomnia.
