Tidying Up: It Only Took One Episode

Hi. My name is Sara Jean. And I'm a hot mess.

Blame it on the fact that I'm an only child. Or that I love to collect things from my travels. Or that I have two pets in one small one-bedroom apartment. Or that I have a t-shirt problem. It could be because I'm so short on time. Maybe it's because my dishwasher has been broken for a year and a half and that my closet dowels have been too.

Or perhaps, it's just because I don't have any idea what I'm doing when it comes to cleaning.

Yeah. Probably the latter.

So when I saw people start posting their before and after photos all over social media after watching Tidying Up with Marie Kondo on Netflix I felt a slight tinge of anxiety. I knew it would just end up being another one of those shows that would make me feel horrible about my life and about my lack of organization and leave me sitting in bed surrounded by a pile of cookie crumbs and dirty laundry.

How wrong could I be...

Instead, this tiny little Japanese woman would manage to light a fire in my belly that I didn't know could be sparked. She would leave me in tears - happy ones of course - and have me thanking my belongings as I carefully tossed each one into a donation bag. She somehow managed to bring joy back into the cluttered apartment I'd been dreading spending time in for close to five years.

Last night I only had time to tackle my clothing. But that is the first step in the KonMari Method. Tonight, I tackle the kitchen. And for the first time in as long as I can remember, I am EXCITED to do it. It's all I've been thinking about while sitting behind my desk at work.

Maybe, just maybe, there's hope for me after all. Which means there's likely hope for you too. Watch the show. Just do it. And let the inspiration take control.

Step One.
Step Two.
Step Three.
