A Father's Day Trip Down Memory Lane

Some call it the middle of nowhere.

I call it the center of my world.

This weekend the fam and I hopped in our trusty Subarus and drove up 395 to the most beautiful place on earth. The place I grew up.

Kettle Falls had a population of 1,540 people and one grouch when I went to high school. Not much has changed. I worked in Colville at the local Arby's (which has converted into a pot shop now). I spent my summers on the banks of Lake Roosevelt and exploring the haunted trails of Old Kettle.

So this weekend we decided to check out the old stomping grounds and it didn't disappoint.

I booked rooms at the old Selkirk Motel right in the heart of downtown Colville. When we arrived we were greeted by blocked off streets ready for the annual rodeo parade. A total surprise and what a taste of small town sweetness. After we saw our fill of fire trucks and rodeo queens we headed off to dinner at the place my Momma worked for 17 years - Taco Time! Then it was a quick trip to explore Douglas Falls, the Colville Park and a drive past the airport where I took my first solo 17 years ago.

That night we packed the car and headed off to the Auto Vue Drive In for a movie and some buttered popcorn. Apparently we aren't as young as we used to be - only being able to stay awake for the first of two movies.

Day two brought us to Starvation Lake for some kayaking and cow chasing. The fish were jumping so much one LITERALLY almost landed in my kayak. Then we made way to Kettle Falls to explore the Old Mission and Old Kettle Falls near the marina.

We filled our bellies at Sandy's Drive Inn (marshmallow shake for the win) and then sat on the banks of Lake Roosevelt reminiscing about the good 'ol days.

Seriously, I couldn't have asked for a better weekend with my folks. Sometimes we just need to go home to be reminded of what truly matters.

GO BULLDOGS!

xoxo, SJ
