Famed London department store Harrod's is facing a backlash after announcing that only children whose families have spent 2,000 pounds -- which is a little over $2,500 -- or more at the store over the year can visit Santa. Yahoo News reports that Harrods has a beloved annual tradition of setting up a grotto where children can visit with Santa during the Christmas season since 1955. But customers are calling the 170-year store greedy and comparing it to the Grinch for now restricting it to children whose parents have spent the 2,000 pounds or more to qualify for a certain tier Harrod's Reward card. Harrod's began the new policy last year, and in response to the pressure, it has agreed this year to allow in 160 families who don't meet the spending threshold -- but that's out of a total of 4,400 10-minute slots with Santa that will be available starting on November 15th. A spokesperson said, "Each year, we are overwhelmed by requests for this special experience, which we make every effort to facilitate. . . .Unfortunately, we simply cannot meet the demand for places. The Harrods Christmas Grotto is offered by invitation only to Harrods Rewards customers in recognition of their loyal custom throughout the year."
