On August 1, 1981, MTV launched at 12:01 am ET, becoming the first-ever 24-hour video music channel. The first words ever spoken on MTV were "ladies and gentlemen, rock and roll," and the first video that aired was 1979's Video Killed the Radio Star by The Buggles. It was a revolution! We would sit around ALL DAY watching these music videos. The first ones were soooo cheesy! But it was just great to see our favorite artists step off the covers of their albums, and into our living rooms! Some of our favorites included, "You Better Run," by Pat Benatar, "You Better You Bet," by The Who, "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around," from Stevie and Tom Petty. And OF COURSE, the Vapors with "Turning Japanese!"
