Parents Get $135K Bill After Son Breaks Statue

A Kansas couple have gotten a bill for $132,000 from the city of Overland Park after their five-year-old son knocked over a glass sculpture, damaging it. The sculpture, called "Aphrodite di Kansas City," was on display at an Overland Park community center when the boy damaged it in May while he was attending a wedding reception with his parents. The city's insurance company accused Sarah Goodman and her husband of negligence for not keeping an eye on the young boy. But Goodman told the Kansas City Star that they should have protected the sculpture better and that her son didn't purposely damage it, saying, "He probably hugged it. Maybe my son hugged a torso because he’s a loving, sweet nice boy who just graduated from preschool." The mother, who said she's given the bill to her insurance company to resolve, stated, "I don’t want to diminish the value of their art, but I can’t pay for that." The sculpture's creator, artist Bill Lyons, told the Star that it was uninsured and damaged beyond repair, saying, "I want to be reimbursed for the amount of time that I spent on it and for what I think it is worth."
