File this one under habits to break: stop rubbing your eyes! Dr. Anupama Horne says we rub our eyes because it can cause tear production, which can moisturize dry or tired eyes, and because it can "initiate the oculocardiac reflex, in which pressure on the eyeball causes a slowing of the heart rate and leads to a feeling of stress reduction." Unfortunately, rubbing too often can damage your eyes and the surrounding structures, and for some people it can even cause "a progressive thinning and shape change of the cornea," which can significantly decrease your vision. As an alternative to rubbing you may want to try using lubricating eye drops. (Men's Health)
