From our sister station KFYI: Former USA Gymnastics and Michigan State University doctor Larry Nassar has been sentenced to a maximum of 175 years in prison for sexually abusing over one hundred women and girls throughout his career. Judge Rosemarie Aquilina handed down the sentence after more than 150 accusers, including many Olympic gymnasts, were allowed to read their impact statements to the court.
The sentence comes after an emotional seven days in court. According to CNN, "168 impact statements were read, including 156 from victims themselves." The women described years of abuse they suffered at the hands of Nassar and explained "how Nassar used his respected position to molest young injured girls seeking medical treatment."
Nassar is currently serving a 60 year prison sentence on federal child pornography charges
Judge Aquilina had harsh words for Nassar as she handed down his sentence. The Detroit Free Press reports she told him "it is my honor and privilege to sentence you, because sir you do not deserve to walk outside a prison ever again."
She explained that his "decision to assault was precise, calculated, manipulative, devious, despicable."
