Receiving a gift from someone you didn't expect to can be so incredibly awkward. And suddenly, you're in a pinch if you don't have anything to give back to them. Social Psychologist Susan Newman says if you never discussed exchanging gifts with the person, all you can do is say, "I didn't know we were exchanging presents. I feel terrible I have nothing for you, but I just love this gift. Thank you," and leave it at that. One big thing to avoid: lying and saying you have a gift for them at home. Texas-based etiquette expert Diane Gottsman says chances are your friend wanted to treat you to something nice without expectations attached anyway. She adds, "Knowing how to accept graciously is a skill we all would benefit from honing." Both experts say you can further show your appreciation by following up with a "thank you" note. Also, it's never a bad idea to have a few items, or gift cards, on hand to give just in case. (Yahoo)
