'Selena' Unveiled At Madame Tussaud's NY Wax Museum

Family and fans gathered Friday to see Selena’s wax figure unveiled at Madame Tussauds in New York. The late singer, born Selena Quintanilla, was honored with a statue at the wax museum more than 22 years after her death. Selena’s sister, Suzette Quintanilla, and Orange is the New Black Jackie Cruz were among those in attendance. Cruz, who plays Flaca on Orange is the New Black, released a music video in 2015 for her cover of Selena’s song “Como La Flor.”

Selena’s wax figure depicts the singer in the purple and black outfit she wore to her concert February 7, 1993, in Corpus Christi, Texas. The statue is a re-sculpt of the original Selena figure at Madame Tussauds Hollywood, which debuted in August.

Selena released four studio albums before she was killed at age 23 by former friend and fan club president Yolanda Saldivar in 1995. She will be honored with a posthumous star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame later this year.

Friday also marked the official CD and DVD release of Selena’s The Last Concert.

According to Madame Tussauds:

  • Selena is the only Latin female artist to have five albums simultaneously on Billboard 200.
  • All the time of its release in July 1995, the posthumous album “Dreaming of You” became the fastest-selling album by a female artist in pop history. The album sold 175,000 copies on its first day alone, more than 400,000 copies in its first week, and debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard pop chart.
  • The bio-pic movie “Selena” (1997) based on her life was a breakthrough role for Jennifer Lopez.
