There’s no doubt people have strong opinions about marriage, whether it’s when to get married, whether to get married, or what makes a good marriage. And while there are some things most people agree on when it comes to saying “I Do,” there are some people who have some controversial opinions, and now they are sharing.
BuzzFeed asked their community to share their unpopular opinions about marriage, and plenty of people were happy to chime in.
Unpopular marriage opinions include:
- “You should never get married without living with someone first. You don't really know someone until you have witnessed them in their home environment. It can be scary.”
- "Nobody should propose out of the blue. It needs to be discussed, so nobody makes a fool out of themselves."
- "It's not a good idea to get married before your mid-twenties. The brain doesn't even stop developing before 25…even if you think they're the one, wait until later to commit. If it's real, they'll wait."
- "Eloping and smaller weddings are vastly underrated. They're cheaper, less fuss, and the focus is on you and your partner's love, as it should be. Big weddings have turned into ridiculously expensive parties where a million expectations are surrounding it."
- "I don't think wives should take their husband's last names. I think it's an old-fashioned custom, and I've always found it kind of creepy, even when I was a little kid.”
- "A prenup is beneficial to everyone. Sign one! I know people always say it's not good to go into a marriage with the plan of divorcing, but a prenup is not that. A prenup is a protection for both of you for whatever may come. It's better to be wary than to get surprised."
- "I feel like anything less than two to three years of dating is too soon to decide that you want to be married for life."
- "True love isn't a thing, and there isn't just one person you're supposed to spend the rest of your life with. What happens is you find someone who is in the same place in life as you, and you form a bond, but even that may not last a lifetime, and that is OK."
