Around Arizona: Besh Ba Gowah Archeological Park & Museum

If you haven't heard of Globe, Arizona, you probably haven't heard of the Besh Ba Gowah Ruins. But that's what makes this hidden gem so marvelous. It's not crowded, it's incredibly informative and educational and my favorite - it's super dog-friendly!

Besh Ba Gowah was home to the Salado people who inhabited the 200-room masonry pueblo over 800 years ago from A.D. 1245 to A.D. 1400. The Apaches took control after 1600 and kept it until the late 1800s. The name Besh Ba Gowah meaning “place of metal,” the Apache description of the ancient village. The site also is home to the adjacent museum with excavated items from the ruins, including prehistoric pottery, stone and woven artifacts.

I'm fascinated by the history of this beautiful state and took my time watching the 12-minute educational video prior to my self-guided tour which had me even more excited about what I was about to see once I stepped back in time. And of course, I took even more time to shop the quaint gift shop for locally and Native-American made goodies to take home and remember the visit by.

Besh Ba Gowah is open Summer (July-September): Wednesday-Sunday 9am-4:30pm and Regular: Daily 9am-4:30pm.
