A non-profit group dedicated to improving public health analyzed a bunch of TV shows and found that shows produced by Netflix had a lot of smoking in them – especially the show Stranger Things, which has tobacco use in pretty much every episode.
After hearing the results of the study, Netflix has promised to cut down on scenes with characters smoking.
Their goal is to eliminate on-screen smoking, unless it’s needed to show the creative vision of the artist or because it defines the character.
Also, starting later this year, Netflix will be including smoking information as part of the ratings so viewers can choose to watch or not watch based on the possibility of seeing someone smoke onscreen.
